NOA, SASHA, AND THE WATCH PARTY

“It lights up.”

“It’s juvenile, but it’s cute.”

Sasha spun the bauble on her left wrist. “Just like my husband. He didn’t have to get me anything for Valentine’s Day.”

From the kitchen of Sasha’s hotel suite, Noa observed the other party guests, happily mingling around the living room TV as they waited for the show to begin.

“Which fantenovela is airing tonight?” Noa asked, averting her eyes from Sasha’s new timepiece. “I haven’t been keeping up like I used to.”

“It’s called Kanaka Nani of Aouli: The Betrayal,” Sasha said. “She’s just like you.”

Noa flinched. “What?”

“Hawaiian.” Sasha poured a bag of kettle corn in a bowl. “Your father is native Hawaiian, right?”

“Both of them are.”

“Then you can tell me whether the movie is authentic,” Sasha declared. “Are you sure you wouldn’t rather spend the holiday with Morrow?”

“It’s not a big day for us. We love each other the rest of the year, too.”

Sasha threw her arm around Noa. “Well, I’m glad you’re here. Good friends are hard to find.”

“And keep,” Noa mumbled, looking at the TV screen. “It’s starting.”
